Managing Units of Measure in Odoo

Managing Units of Measure in Odoo

In Odoo, there are various ways to specify the quantity of products when buying, stocking, and selling them, using Units of Measure (UoM). UoM refers to the various standards used to measure and handle products, including units, weight, time, or size. For instance, different UoMs for weight can include kilos, pounds, ounces, grams, and more.

In some scenarios, it becomes necessary to manage products using different UoMs. Odoo simplifies this process by allowing users to define and utilize distinct UoMs for both purchasing and selling products. This flexibility can be configured for a single products as needed.

Buy Products using the Purchase UoM

  1. When creating a new Request for Quotation (RFQ) in the Purchase application, Odoo automatically uses the product's specified Purchase UoM. However, users have the option to manually edit the UoM on the RFQ if necessary.
  2. Once the RFQ is confirmed into a Purchase Order (PO), click on the "Receipt" smart button. Odoo seamlessly converts the Purchase UoM into the product's sales/inventory unit of measure, displaying the converted quantity in the "Demand" column of the Delivery Receipt.

For example, if the product's purchase UoM is "Box of 6," and its sales/inventory unit of measure is "Units," the PO will show the quantity in boxes of six, while the delivery receipt will indicate the quantity in individual units.

Sell in a Different UoM

  1. In the Sales app, when creating a new Quotation, Odoo automatically employs the product's specified unit of measure. However, users can manually adjust the UoM within the Quotation if required.
  2. After sending the Quotation to the customer and confirming it as a Sales Order (SO), click on the "Delivery" smart button. Odoo seamlessly converts the unit of measure into the product's inventory unit of measure, ensuring that the "Demand" column in the delivery aligns with the inventory management system.

For example, if the product's UoM on the SO was changed to "Box of 6," but its inventory unit of measure remains "Units," the SO will display the quantity in boxes of six, while the delivery will indicate the quantity in individual units.
